anyone have any experience using a em/r that used bow attacks??

ill put attributes in only energy/air/marksmanship.. would that be fun to play and would it be any effective..

An elementalist can be a ranged attacker with just spells and staff. Losing the staff will cost you some energy and spellcasting-related modifiers, like fast cast and fast recharge chances.

That being said anything can work, give it a try. You don't have to have the "ultimate build" to beat the game or have fun, and you can always change it later if you want.

I changed my ascended elementalist to /ranger this weekend and went out and charmed a lizard so want to play around with the el/ra but will use a staff.

I had a bow weilding E/R in Pre-Searing. Had a pet running around with me too. It was fun. After awhile, the pet went... and then the bow.

I just found that I did more damage with spells than with a bow, and even more so in Post-Searing due to having access to more elementalist skills. I did keep the bow for pulling, but then a wand or staff can do the job pretty well too.

If you really like using a bow, then yes, it would be fun to play. Whether you're effective or not, well that really depends on what skills you take.

The Air line of magic is good with useful spells that has armor penetration/knock down/etc. A warrior got too close for your liking, knock him down or blind him and continue to shoot arrows into him.

If you play a suboptimal build like that, just for fun -- first of all, good for you!

Second, be prepared to switch weapons quickly, between elementalist weapons and a bow. Otherwise you'll REALLY be underpowered.

One little idea that will HELP you is the "Conjure X" line of spells. A build like what you want to do is about the only way they're useful, so you might as well have fun with that.

Consider Hunter's Shot plus Whirlwind as a combo.

Good luck!

Hmm, as a E/R my skill bar normally consists of fire spells and winter, though in PvP I'm more likely to use winter, greater conf. and earth (for wards).
I had a bow and a pet for a while too, but I've found points are better spent in WS than in M or BM.

By the way, the canonical Ele/R build idea has nothing to do with archery.

Rather, it's "Permanent Mistform" or "Permanent Obsidian Flesh". The key idea is to use Serpent's Quickness and an enchantment-extended staff wrapping (or bow grip, I guess ), to have a powerful defensive enchantment be up 100% of the time.

Doesn't work against enchantment strippers or hard-core spell interrupters, however.

If you want to work with the bow go R/E instead. High expertise will do more for your energy management than high Energy Storage if you're focusing on bow attacks, and you'll also be naturally tougher.

Only thing a E/R could do well with really probally is:
Either some conjured weapon.
Thunder clap with a lightning string.
